Brown Mountain Lights

     Dear Journal,

I, Dan Jaques, a world famous scientist from Harvard have heard about the mysterious Brown Mountain Lights. They are an unexplained phenomenon. I plan to visit soon.

I recently visited Brown Mountain in 2010, to see the Brown Mountain lights. The lights are these mysterious, Ghostly lights that flash on and off at Brown Mountain North Carolina. No one knows why the lights flash. There are no people who hike there and there are no power lines or anything. The area has been searched many times and nothing has been found. The first reports of the lights were first spotted from September 13, 1913.  No one thinks that anything special happened around that time. It was just a normal night when lights just started flashing on and off. They are often seen near rhododendron thickets. They are best seen from Wiseman`s View and can be also seen from the Blue Ridge Parkway. My theory in that a lot of fireflies blink at one time and produce a bright light that can be seen from a long distance away. There is no other possible way for the lights to blink like that. Fireflies usually mate year round but lots mate during September through November. Thousand to millions of fireflies would be out during this time. Males blink and flash a lot to attract females. I think no one has spotted them because whenever people or animals that might be predators come along they fly away and hide in the rhododendron thickets. This clearly explains my theory of the Brown Mountain Lights.

     Dear Journal,

I have posted my theory on the CNN website and a lot of people agree with my theory. After six hours 1,484 people have commented saying that they like my reasoning. Next Sunday the New York Times wants me to write an article in the paper. They want me to explain the theory of the Brown Mountain Lights. Many professors at Yale, Harvard, Stamford, and the University of Pennsylvania agree with my theory.
